Museum Foundation of the Philippines

The period 1987-88 saw efforts by concerned citizens to actively engage the public on the needs of the National Museum of the Philippines. This was also a period of great political change and the beginning of Cory Aquino’s government that was swept into government by People Power in 1986. It was on this year that Mrs. Purita Kalaw Ledesma, an artist and respected art patron, founded the “Concerned Citizens for the National Museum.”

In 1995, members of the”Concerned Citizens for the National Museum” registered the entity as the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI), which enabled it to raise vital funds for museum-related projects. The Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc., a non-stock, not-for-profit organization was thus established to assist Philippine museums bring greater awareness and appreciation of the country’s cultural heritage to the everyday lives of ordinary people.

The Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. is a membership and volunteer organization of people concerned for the welfare and state of the National Museum of the Philippines. It dedicates itself primarily to raising cultural awareness and appreciation through various museum-related activities such as:

  • Conducting lectures on Philippine art, history, and culture
  • Organizing cultural study tours
  • Training teachers and museum guides to use museums as a teaching tool
  • Conducting museum appreciation programs for kids
  • Providing minor financial assistance for activities related to education, exhibitions, publications, and collection management
  • Forming partnerships with like-minded organizations
  • Implementing tri-media promotions for schools, churches, local governments, and corporations
